The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter is a compelling portrait of isolated characters and of their longing for self-expression, human connection, and spiritual integration.īorn Lula Carson Smith in Columbus, McCullers was in her early twenties when she wrote The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter. Many of the characters in the novel are grotesques, a term in southern literature for those who are known for their exaggerated attributes, unusual characteristics, or obsessive-compulsive thought processes or behaviors. It’s this thing that happens and changes a secondary character and… I was left like, what’s the point? The doctor bills end up essentially bankrupting a family which leads to a main character needing to get a job and thus leapfrog childhood. The first novel by Georgia writer Carson McCullers, The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter is commonly treated as a coming-of-age story by readers and critics alike. The way it just sort of happens in a sentence, but isn’t really explored was so strange to me. Then, when things DID happen, SPOILER-ish… a child gets shot.

I don’t really care about the lavender clouds any more or how hot or cold the room is… Let’s shake out some rising action here! The descriptions of the scenery, mostly the sky, which were rich and interesting during the first half started to wear on me. McCullers used third person narration and dialogue made my little writer brain very excited.īut, by about halfway through the book, I started to hope something would HAPPEN. I actually dissected a chapter with dialogue between Portia and Doc Copeland, because the seamless way Ms. Instead Portia works in a kitchen while her brothers work a farm or do… whatever Willie was doing before shit went south for him, which I won’t spoil. They were rich (none in actual money) and complicated and I especially loved the storyline for Doctor Copeland, an African America doctor estranged from his children and disappointed in their lack of achievement toward improving the treatment of their race. Oh boy it’s gonna be great!Īnd, as I started to learn about the characters, I loved them. Set in 1940 in a small southern US town, there’s racism and class issues and Hitler talk. Welp, I loved the idea of it: A series of lonely people talk to a deaf mute and discover things about themselves through his silence and kind eyes. My Review of The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter There doesn’t appear to be an official music video, and there are quite a few of these with lyrics on YouTube… but, I mean, look at this still of Reba. But of course, my review is excellent as well… so, let’s start with Reba and then slowly degrade awesomeness. I mean, before we can get into the review, I must address the elephant in the room.
